Whether a disability is from a lifelong impairment, an accident, illness or advancing age, people are usually poorly informed about disability benefits, welfare rights and the availability and suitability of assistive technology. (Assistive technology is not just computers or communication aids, it is the term used to describe any piece of equipment that can help you to be independent such as a walking stick, raised toilet seat or environment controls, etc. Centres providing these services may be referred to as Independent Living Centres, Disabled Living Centres or Assistive Technology Centres.)

Information, advice and support for disabled people

Who we are

The Disability North Service Team offers you a demand led, person centred approach which will consider all of your individual needs and aim to provide you with the solutions to address them.

We are a friendly experienced team that offers you free, confidential and independent information on a wide range of disability issues to disabled and older people and anyone with an interest in disability.

(Our services were previously offered by separate teams known as the Independent Living Resource Centre [ILRC], the Information and Advice Service [IAS] and the Direct Payment Support Team)

The Service Team is based in the accessible offices at the Dene Centre, which is located on Castle Farm Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

What we do

The Service Team provides advice and guidance on benefit claims from initial application through to representation at appeals. Examples of the benefits we advise on include:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)/Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Carer's Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance

We can also provide information on all aspects of independent living, such as personal care and leisure. These are often referred to as activities of daily living or ADL.

We have a comprehensive range of equipment  and demonstration areas, including an accessible bathroom and living area, stairlifts and a mobility track. Free assessments, by appointment, are carried out by therapists who can give independent guidance on the most suitable equipment for you.

Although we don't provide or sell any equipment ourselves we do coordinate a secondhand list for people looking to sell or donate equipment. Full details are available from the Service Team and, for those who are happy to advertise on the internet, you can see their adverts on the secondhnad equipment page.

Direct Payment Support provides information, advice and training for people who are receiving or considering using Direct Payments. We assist disabled people in recruiting Personal Assistants (see current advertisements) and provide employer training.

If you wish to find out more about any of the services we offer please telephone us or drop into the centre for general information. However, for more in depth advice or an assessment, please make an appointment.
