Hours: 7-14 per week, averaged throughout the month (flexible to suit us both)
Rate of Pay: £13.26 per hour
Area: Selby, North Yorkshire
Female Personal Assistant (trans and non-binary applicants also welcome)
Hi, I’m a 43-year-old woman living with multiple disabilities which look like mobility loss, fatigue, and struggles with cognitive and executive function and emotional regulation. I’m quite introverted and I love reading, nature, yoga and meditation, history and archaeology, psychology and human sciences, and learning new things in general. I have a strong sense of fairness and care about human rights and environmental justice.
I live at home, no pets, sometimes family members are in the house. I am a wheelchair user when out and about and can get about within the home.
Brief details of the job:
Core Role (7 hours per week):
Strong communication, organisation, and advocacy skills are essential. Part of the core role can be done remotely with in-person attendance needed at medical appointments and sometimes to check in at home.
- Regular planning meeting with myself. You will act as the ‘memory’ in our team and keep track of what needs doing and when.
- Acting on my behalf for life and medical admin. Liaising with organisations such as NHS, DWP, Social Services. This can mean lots of chasing, a lot of time spent on hold, and a little bit of detective work in finding out how to get to the right person to speak to, as well as the ability to communicate to achieve outcomes.
- I tend to become emotionally dysregulated by such interactions, so need you to act as a barrier between me and them, whilst also ensuring that the organisation is doing what they’re supposed to do and helping me to be clear on the process.
- Attendance with me at some medical appointments – like buses, these can be a long time in between and then suddenly several come along all at once. Your role for these appointments is to help me to be clear on what outcomes we want for the appointment going in (i.e. do I want information, referral, tests) and helping to achieve these outcomes within the appointment. My experience is that some GPs struggle with complex health conditions and would rather dismiss than investigate, and that medical misogyny is real, so the ability to communicate and advocate clearly and calmly is essential. I will give you as much notice for these as the NHS gives me! These are typically either in Selby or in York.
- Planning meals and online shopping.
- Keeping track of meds and supplements including when to order more.
- Other similar tasks to bridge the gaps in my memory, cognitive and executive function, and emotional regulation.
- You do not need to have a driving licence but if you do have one I can insure you on my Motability vehicle.
Optional Additional Role (7 more hours per week)
This is an additional role for household tasks and can be done by a second person or by yourself, depending on how many hours you want. This role involves a commitment to being available for 7 hours per week in Selby, over one or two days.
- Batch cooking
- Cleaning
- Laundry
- General household tidying
- Helping me to do things in the garden
- Other general household tasks
You will need an enhanced DBS check for both roles.
